Poor Italy

The Italian bank where I have an account in Italy has changed name twice on the last 2 years which is suspicious enough. I had 80 dollars to change into Euros and this morning I went into one of their agencies. They said that I couldn’t change the money there. “I have an account in this bank, don’t I?” – I asked, while the clerk’s colleague was commenting “My God so many people are changing dollars to euro this month…” – I felt like I was a poor man desperate for cash, not in a bank… And the clerk added: “You need to deposit your money in your account and you need to go to the same agency where you open your account” – they told me. “Wow… Why do I have to do all that?” – I asked and this is what they told me: “Because we don’t have a machine to check if your dollars are fake. These machines are expensive for banks, you know…, to purchase one is one thousand euro. So you need to deposit the money in your account. That way we can trace you in case you gave us fake notes”. I was laughing at the clerk : “You know, I live in China and I don’t have this problem. I can change money in every bank I want” and the final answer was “But this is Italy and things aren’t going too well…”. I guess so. It took me a while to get thing done, including writing a check to myself to cash out a mear 50 euros…. Terrible… Poor Italy… Poor Eurozone…
